MY FIRST BLOG - BECOMING A 3D ARTIST

About 6 years ago I started my education “3d Producer” at the college of multimedia in Amsterdam. I had been struggling to find an education for a few years like many people of my age and tried different studies that either couldn’t get me motivated enough or just didn’t meet my expectations.

As it felt like failure not completing my first 2 studies, I did learn some useful skills in that period of time that would turn out to be very helpful working as a 3D artist.

My photography course taught me a lot about lighting and composing a scene that helped me out with every render I have made. Photography is still a hobby of mine but I was always more interested in photo shopping the photo’s so the 3d world offered me a lot more options doing just that!

IT AMAZED ME

HOW MUCH PROGRESS

I HAD MADE

After I graduated as 3D Producer I started an internship of 6 months where I was working on creating 3D models for packs for the pixellab. In those 6 months I learned a lot more about Cinema4d and got better and faster with every model I made. packs for the pixellab After I graduated as a 3D Producer I started an internship of 6 months were I was working on creating 3D models for packs for the pixellab.

Looking back at that final assignment I see how much more I have learned since then and that makes me very excited about the future! I can’t wait to find out what I have been doing and working on in the next 5 years!

After my education “3d Producer” I had learned the basics of modeling, texturing, lighting, animating and many other basic stuff you can do with Cinema4d. It amazed me how much progress I had made over the 6 months and finally could motivate myself to get the best out of my efforts. I had never experienced that before on any other education and I even enjoyed working on the school assignments so much that I lost track of time when I was working on them. In my final assignment I animated the launch of a spacehuttle.

Looking back at that final assignment I see how much more I have learned since then and that makes me very excited about the future! I can’t wait to find out what I have been doing and working on in the next 5 years!

So yay to me! After the internship I started my career as a Freelance 3D Artist which was exactly 5 years ago on the 13th of February.

At first that was hard because I had no experience in being my own boss and dealing with agreements between me and my first clients was a hard but good experience for me. I learned how to deal with deadlines, financial agreements and where to draw the line. As difficult as those experiences were, I learned how to stand up for myself and how to deal with clients so that I would still enjoy being a 3D artist

Over the last 5 years I have worked on some great projects and gained some great regular clients. Take a look at my showreel and portfolio to see some of my work!

A few months ago I got interested in rendering my 3d models and scenes on a higher level than I had been doing, using the standard Cinema4d render.

Studio Light Pack for Octane Cinema4d

I had tried demo versions of multiple 3d rendering software like V-ray, corona but never really felt comfortable using them. I’m sure it’s a personal preference but until I tried Octane render it just didn’t feel right. I enjoy spending hours on end perfecting lighting scenes and making photorealistic materials so the render software and I had to click.

EVERYTHING HAPPENS

FOR A REASON TURNED OUT

TO BE TRUE IN MY CASE

I feel like Octane Render gave me a boost again and I have been enjoying myself greatly with figuring out how to make some great textures and scene’s. It once again made me realise that the cliché of everything happens for a reason and lessons can be taken out of every experience in your life turned out to be true in my case.

I hope to gain a lot of exciting and fun experiences as a 3D Artist and will be creating a lot more stuff in the future!

Tim.

I want to share some of the materials and lighting scenes I have made so far so made some packs with more to come in the next few months!
